Marine Diesel Basics

This 12-hour class is designed for both recreational boaters and professional mariners who operate vessels equipped with diesel engines. The course covers all types of diesel engines and is not brand specific. While no previous experience is necessary, we have had experienced gasoline engine and automotive mechanics take this class to learn the unique characteristics of marine diesel engines.

11am – Diesel Troubleshooting
Take a logical approach to troubleshooting common starting failures

12pm – Line Handling
Coiling, throwing lines, tying cleat hitches and a few key knots

1pm – Electrical System
Electrical components overview, using the multi meter and managing your electrical system

2pm – RADAR
Orientation to RADAR for collision avoidance and navigation, using EBLs, VRMs, and proper tuning

3pm – Electronic Navigation*
Proper use of GPS and chart plotters as an aid to navigation

4pm – Chart Navigation* 
Plotting your position on a paper chart, determining a course to steer, bearings and fixes

*The 3:00 and 4:00 demos will not run on Sunday.
